Begin With One Slow Movement

The smallest form is the whole practice: one slow movement, performed with full attention. Lift the arm — slowly, feeling the shoulder, the elbow, the wrist through the whole arc. Or shift the weight from one foot to the other, feeling the ground change under each sole. The movement is slow enough that the attention can stay with it, from the beginning through the middle to the end. Two minutes of one movement is a complete session.

This is the alphabet of meditation in motion: the attention resting on the felt movement the way it rests on the breath. The body moves; the attention rides it. When the mind wanders — and it will — the return is to the movement, not to the thought. The single movement, repeated with attention, is the practice in its purest form.
