"Inner child work" is everywhere in self-help culture — but the term covers a huge range, from rigorously tested clinical models to vague journaling prompts. The evidence behind each is very different.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) has been recognized by the U.S. National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices since 2015, with randomized controlled trials supporting its use for depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Schema therapy's Vulnerable Child mode and Limited Reparenting technique have particularly strong trial evidence for personality disorders. But a 2025 scoping review found the IFS evidence base still leans heavily on case studies — only about 7% of 27 total studies were RCTs.
