The Definition What Somatic Awareness Means in Maya's Practice
In Maya's teaching, somatic awareness is a way of living that grows with the practice — with the days, and with each returning. It is the difference between thinking about a situation and living it through the body: the whole texture felt first, before the mind translates it into words.
Much of what a person takes as simply 'how they think' — a decision made from logic alone, an emotion named from a list, a life lived in the head — actually bypasses a layer of information the body was offering all along. Maya's work is restoring that channel: teaching the body to speak again, and the person to hear it. She describes the familiar state plainly — the mind is always somewhere on the periphery, in the past or in the future, rarely deeply in the body. The descent into the body is assembled gradually, like any real skill, and it takes root in the belly: many of the centers and meridians responsible for vitality sit there, and the grounding practices pass through the belly, the roots, and the legs.
The work moves across levels: the physical body — breath, belly, grounding; the energetic — how energy moves through the body, and where it does not pass; the soul and the unconscious — where accumulated tension and suppressed experience live; and consciousness itself, which learns to hear all of it. This is why the practice is called a foundation: whatever deeper work comes later stands on this listening.
- Somatic awareness is task number one: ongoing and regular, it grows with the days — no matter your age or your experience — until presence in the body becomes the default source of information.
- The body in motion is a direct way in: Mandala Dance and Wave Yoga build presence through motion — the felt sense deepens through the moving body.
- Stillness reaches the same felt sense on the quiet road: Maya's seated, voice-guided meditation offers room for the body to communicate what is already present, without the pressure to control or name.
"First of all, we need to become a specialist of our own body, build this connection, build the foundation so that we can adjust ourselves throughout our entire life."
In the meeting dedicated to the coming seminar, Maya describes the aim of the work: becoming a specialist of your own body, so the connection serves you through your whole life.
