"Why do I swing between feeling wired and feeling numb?" is a common, disorienting experience — and it maps onto a well-used clinical concept: nervous system dysregulation.
Psychiatrist Dan Siegel's “window of tolerance” is a widely used metaphor describing the zone of arousal where someone can stay present, adaptable, and engaged. When stress exceeds what the nervous system can currently handle, it moves outside that window — into hyperarousal (overactivation) or hypoarousal (shutdown).
This guide covers what dysregulation actually looks like, what it isn't, and what gently expanding capacity for it involves.
