Guided meditation has real research behind it — one of the largest meta-analyses ever conducted found meaningful stress reduction. But the more honest finding underneath is less about the "guided" part than you might expect.

A PLOS Medicine meta-analysis of 136 randomized controlled trials with 11,605 participants found guided meditation significantly reduced stress (SMD -0.45). But research comparing guided to unguided practice found no strong evidence either is definitively better — and a separate meta-analysis of 83 RCTs found unguided self-help also produces small but real benefits. What predicts outcomes more reliably: consistency of practice.

This guide covers what the research actually supports, and how to choose a practice you'll actually keep.
